Many women with invasive breast cancer unaware about skin-sparing mastectomy
In the U.S., more than 180,000 women are diagnosed with invasive breast cancer each year. Many of these women will undergo mastectomy surgery that will result in disfiguring scars because they are unaware of the availability of skin-sparing mastectomies and did not ask their surgeons about this treatment option. Skin-sparing mastectomy is a surgical technique to remove cancerous breast tissue by …

India provides professional medical team of surgeons and physicians for the comfort and benefit of the patient at its best. Thyroid Cancer is a cancer that starts in the thyroid gland. To understand Thyroid Cancer, it helps to know about the normal structure and function of the thyroid gland. Thyroid cancer usually refers to any of four kinds of malignant tumors of the thyroid gland: papillary, follicular, medullary or anaplastic. Most patients are 25 to 65 years of age when first diagnosed; women are more affected than men. Papillary and follicular tumors are the most common. They grow slowly and may recur, but are generally not fatal in patients under 45 years of age. Medullary tumors have a good prognosis if restricted to the thyroid gland and a poorer prognosis if metastasis occurs. Anaplastic tumors are fast-growing and respond poorly to therapy. Jaslok Health Group in India provides best physicians and surgeons to their patients for better assistance and treatment.

Modules present for Thyroid -

Benign nodules are not cancer. Cells from benign nodules do not spread to other parts of the body. They are usually not a threat to life. Most thyroid nodules (more than 90 percent) are benign. Malignant nodules are cancer. They are generally more serious and may sometimes be life threatening. Cancer cells can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Also, cancer cells can break away from a malignant nodule and enter the bloodstream or the lymphatic system. That is how cancer spreads from the original cancer (primary tumor) to form new tumors in other organs. The spread of cancer is called metastasis.

Most often the first symptom of Thyroid Cancer is a nodule in the thyroid region of the neck. However, many adults have small nodules in their thyroids, but typically fewer than 5% of these nodules are found to be malignant. Sometimes the first sign is an enlarged lymph node. Later symptoms that can be present are pain in the anterior region of the neck and changes in voice. Thyroid Cancer is usually found in a euthyroid patient, but symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism may be associated with a large or metastatic well-differentiated tumor. Nodules are of particular concern when they are found in those under the age of 20. The presentation of benign nodules at this age is less likely, and thus the potential for malignancy is far greater.

The following are the major types of thyroid cancer -

Papillary and follicular thyroid cancers account for 80 to 90 percent of all thyroid cancers. Both types begin in the follicular cells of the thyroid. Most papillary and follicular thyroid cancers tend to grow slowly. If they are detected early, most can be treated successfully. Medullary Thyroid Cancer accounts for 5 to 10 percent of thyroid cancer cases. It arises in C cells, not follicular cells. Medullary thyroid cancer is easier to control if it is found and treated before it spreads to other parts of the body. Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer is the least common type of thyroid cancer (only 1 to 2 percent of cases). It arises in the follicular cells. The cancer cells are highly abnormal and difficult to recognize. This type of cancer is usually very hard to control because the cancer cells tend to grow and spread very quickly.

If the nodule is benign, patients may receive thyroxin therapy to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone and should be re-evaluated in 6 months. If the nodule is malignant or has indeterminate cytologic features, it may require surgery. Common Thyroid Cancer surgeries include thyroidectomy, lobectomy, and tracheostomy. Radioactive Iodine-131 is used in patients with papillary or follicular thyroid cancer for ablation of residual thyroid tissue after surgery and for the treatment of thyroid cancer. Patients with medullary, anaplastic, and most Hurtle cell cancers do not benefit from this therapy. External irradiation may be used when the cancer is resectable, when it recurs after resection, or to relieve pain from bone metastasis.

Thyroid cancer is a disease in which cancerous cells are formed in thyroid gland. Thyroid gland is situated just above your collarbone. It is a butterfly shaped gland in your neck.

It is a very small gland regulating every aspect of your body metabolism by secreting various hormones. One or more solid or fluid filled lumps named as nodules are also developed in your thyroid. Many of them are benign but some are malignant leading to cancerous stage.

Thyroid cancer can have severe complications. The types of thyroid cancer depend on the type of cell from where it begins. Papillary or follicle thyroid cancer occurs in follicle cells. The types of the thyroid cancer are as follows:

  • Papillary cancer
  • Follicular cancer
  • Anaplastic cancer
  • Thyroid lymphoma
  • Medullary cancer
  • In early stages of thyroid cancer we don’t have signs and symptoms. You may find some symptoms in later developed stage.

  • Breathing trouble

“Trojan Horse” Used to Terminate Cancer Cells

Scientists have long been looking for a better way to fight the battle of cancer, rather than the traditional radiation and chemotherapy treatments, both of which damage healthy cells instead of just the cancerous ones. Now they might have found the answer with a new treatment they call the “Trojan horse” therapy.

A team of researchers in Australia have developed the new “Trojan horse” therapy to help combat cancer by using a bacterially-derived nano cell to help penetrate and disarm the cell that is cancerous before a second nano cell kills it with the chemotherapy drugs.

The “Trojan horse” therapy has the potential to target the cancer cells directly with chemotherapy, rather than the current treatment where drugs are injected into the cancer patient and end up attacking both the healthy and the cancer cells.

RNA interference, also known as RNAi, is designed to help silence the genes that are responsible for producing disease-causing proteins and is considered one of the hottest areas of biotechnology research.

The subject of RNA was the basis of the 2006 Nobel Prize in medicine. Dozen of biotechnology companies are already looking for way that they can manipulate RNA to help block the genes that produce disease-causing proteins that are involved in blindness, cancer or AIDS.
