Oximetry

Oximetry evaluates different medical conditions affecting lungs and heart function. It is simple method used for monitoring arterial haemoglobin percentage saturated with oxygen. It also measures pulse rate in beats per minute. It is noninvasive method. An instrument, pulse oximeter is used for monitoring. Oximetry is performed on the heart blood  or all blood which is removed from body. Similar technology is used to measure the carbon dioxide levels at the skin.

Oximeter is a photoelectric device. A probe of the oximeter is attached to ear lob or the finger of the patient. A probe is linked with computerized unit. This unit shows haemoglobin percentage saturated with oxygen together. It has an audible signal with each pulse rate.

A light source of two wavelengths  originates from probe. Haemoglobin partly absorbs the light. Differing amount tells that if it is desaturated or saturated with oxygen. The absorption at two wavelengths is calculated and processor computes percentage of oxygenated haemoglobin.

Computer inside the oximeter can differentiate between static signals and pulsatile flow. So it can display only arterial flow. Light signal with oximeter has pulsatile component. It shows volume change of arterial blood with each pulse beat.

If supplemental oxygen is provided to the patient, oximeter gives false indications of security. It is because it does not give the indication of ventilation of patient but only its oxygenation.

Thyroid blood tests

Thyroid blood tests are used to test the amount of thyroid stimulating hormone  in blood. Normal, overactive or under active hormone production of thyroid gland is defined in blood tests.

The tests are done for the following symptoms:

  • If patients feel fatigue, cold, intolerance, dry, flaky skin, constipation. If patients have excessive sweating, tremors, smooth and velvety skin, rapid heart rate, fine hair, and an enlarged thyroid gland.
  • The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists in 2003 recommended a new normal level of thyroid in blood that lies between 0.3 to 3.0. It is against the older range, which was 0.5 to 5.5. Now, considering the new research standards, if thyroid level is above 3.0, it is considered as a case of hypothyroidism and if level is below 0.3, then it will be the case of hyperthyroidism. All practitioners do not consider new levels and hence the diagnosis may vary. Normal levels of some tests

  • TSH – 0.3 to 3.0(new American value) If TSH level is below normal, then it may be hyperthyroid. If it is above normal, then it may be hypothyroid.
  • Total T 4- 4.5 to 12.5 here in case, you have low reading and high TSH, and then it may be the case of hypothyroidism. In case of a low reading and low TSH you may have pituitary problem.
  • Free T4 – 0.7 to 2.0 If this level is below 09.7, then it is considered as indicative of hypothyroidism.
  • Total T3 – 80 to 220 if your result is less than 80, then it will be considered as indicative of hypothyroidism.
  • Free T3 – 2.3 to 4.2 in case the result is less than 2.3, then it may be indicative of hypothyroidism.
  • Thyroid blood test is rarely associated with the risks. The patient may get a small bruise at the site where blood sample is taken.

In rare cases, the vein may become swollen as a result of taking blood sample. People with bleeding disorders can have ongoing bleeding.  all the risks are temporarily and can be eliminated by applying simple methods.
