Otoplasty is a surgical procedure performed for reducing large size of ears or setting high-flying ears back nearer to the head. Most of the time, this operation is performed on children between the ages of four to fourteen. By the age of 4, ear growth is complete. The child will have to suffer less teasing and ridicule, if the surgery is performed early. Ear surgery performed in old age, does not result into additional risks.

If a person has protruded ears, octoplasty is performed. If patient feel uncomfortable about his ears and he himself wants to repair them with a surgical process, then he is more cooperative in the surgical process.Initialy, surgeon will examine a patient and recommend the convenient technique for him. Instructions about the preparation for the surgery are given then.

For younger children local anesthesia is preferred. For older children and adults, local anesthesia with sedative is used. The technique of the surgery depends on problem.A small incision is made at the back of the ear in one of the technique. Surgeon exposes ear cartilage. He or she sculpts the cartilage and bends it back towards the head. To maintain the shape of the ear non removable stitches are used. Removal of the larger piece of the cartilage is carried out for natural looking of the ear after completion of the surgery.
