India is one amongst the developing countries wherein the prevalence of Anaemia is at its height. The most common type of anaemia is iron deficiency anaemia, which basically means the body is running low on iron.

For adult men, a hemoglobin level less than 13.0 g/dl is diagnostic of anemia, and for adult women, the diagnostic threshold is below 12.0 g/dl.

There is not usually one cause of anaemia. However, following are the reasons why anaemia may develop:

  • Heavy periods.
  • Diet low in iron.
  • Internal bleeding, for example if you have an ulcer or a tumour.
  • Diet low in vitamin B12 or folic acid.
  • Blood diseases such as leukaemia.
  • Infections, such as malaria.
  • Though the amount of Iron in the body is only about 2-3g, its presence is very important as it is required for development of hemoglobin.

Its main function is to supply oxygen from the lungs to the cell & to carry back some of carbon dioxide formed to the lungs.

So a lack of Fe in the diet can lead to anemia a condition that is synonymous with prolonged lethargy, loss of work capacity, breathlessness & impaired immunity.

So regular recipes that could be altered as follows:

  • Theplas could be prepared using cauliflower & methi.
  • Til & groundnut chikki as a sweet preparation.
  • Rice flakes delight (raita) is prepared using poha, curds, carrot, cucumber, little spices, and oil.
  • Green chutney could be made using mint & coriander both.
  • A glass of vegetable juice that is a blend of palak, beetroot, tomato, carrot & lemon is also healthier option.
  • So it will be good to say that ‘little effort & little awareness ‘ can do wonders for our complaints.
